How to Calculate Percentage?

Percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word comes from the Latin "per centum," meaning "by the hundred." Percentages are used everywhere - from discounts and taxes to exam scores and interest rates.

Percentage Formulas

1. Finding X% of a Number

X% of Y = (X × Y) / 100

Example: 20% of 150 = (20 × 150) / 100 = 30

2. What Percentage is X of Y?

Percentage = (X / Y) × 100

Example: 25 is what % of 200? = (25 / 200) × 100 = 12.5%

3. Percentage Change (Increase/Decrease)

% Change = ((New Value - Old Value) / Old Value) × 100

Example: Price increased from ₹80 to ₹100 = ((100 - 80) / 80) × 100 = 25% increase

4. Percentage Difference

% Difference = (|A - B| / Average of A and B) × 100

Example: Difference between 50 and 200 = (150 / 125) × 100 = 120%

Frequently Asked Questions

To find X% of a number Y, multiply them and divide by 100. Formula: (X × Y) / 100. For example, 15% of 200 = (15 × 200) / 100 = 30.

Percentage increase = ((New Value - Original Value) / Original Value) × 100. If a price goes from ₹100 to ₹120, the increase is ((120-100)/100) × 100 = 20%.

Percentage is a value out of 100 (like scoring 85%). Percentile indicates the value below which a percentage of data falls. Being in the 90th percentile means you scored better than 90% of test-takers.

Divide the numerator by denominator and multiply by 100. For example, 3/4 = (3 ÷ 4) × 100 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%.

If you know the discounted price and discount %, divide by (1 - discount%/100). For example, if ₹800 is after 20% discount, original = 800 / 0.8 = ₹1000.
