What is NPS (National Pension Scheme)?

The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, defined contribution retirement savings scheme designed by the Government of India. It was initially launched for government employees in 2004 and later extended to all Indian citizens in 2009.

NPS is regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). It offers market-linked returns through professional fund managers and provides flexibility in choosing asset allocation between equity, corporate bonds, and government securities.

Frequently Asked Questions

For NPS Tier I, minimum annual contribution is ₹1,000 (can be in multiple installments of ₹500). For Tier II, minimum is ₹250 per contribution. There is no maximum limit for contributions.

NPS returns are market-linked and not guaranteed. Historically, NPS has delivered 9-12% returns depending on asset allocation. Equity funds have given higher returns (10-14%) while government securities give stable returns (8-9%).

NPS offers potentially higher returns (market-linked) and extra ₹50,000 tax deduction, but has partial lock-in and mandatory annuity. PPF offers guaranteed 7.1% returns with full withdrawal at maturity. NPS suits those seeking higher returns with moderate risk.

Partial withdrawal is allowed after 3 years for specific purposes (max 25%, up to 3 times). Full exit before 60 requires 80% to be used for annuity purchase. Only 20% can be withdrawn as lumpsum, and it's taxable.

Monthly pension depends on your corpus size, annuity percentage (min 40%), and annuity rate (typically 5-7%). For example, with ₹1 crore corpus, 40% annuity at 6% rate gives approximately ₹20,000 monthly pension.
